EAST ANTRIM HOCKEY CLUB INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT

East Antrim Hockey Club, in conjunction with Newtownabbey Borough Council, are hosting their first invitiational tournament for almost 20 years this September. Their pre-season schedule includes a round-robin tournament being held at the University of Ulster at Jordanstown over the 5th, 6th and 7th of September.

Local rivals Larne have been invited to the competition which includes two teams from Glasgow - Uddingston Hockey Club and Clydesdale Hockey Club.

Uddingston and Clydesdale were kind enough to play host to the East Antrim Club last year as part of the Club's centenary tour and have agreed to travel to Northern Ireland to allow East Antrim to offer similar hospitality.

Tournament organiser, Neal Hermon, has been working tirelessly over the last few months in preparation for the tournament, but he did explain that life was made easy for him: "I was going to invite a number of official umpires to come along as facilitate the matches, but two English umpires found out about the tournament on our website and decided to book flights in order to gain some 'international' officiating experience! We are looking forward to meeting them and experiencing some English umpiring."

However, there has been a slight hitch in that the Clydesdale tourists are booked on an Easyjet flight that must not be delayed - their first match in the tournament is just 2 hours after scheduled take-off! Hopefully Easyjet can do the East Antrim Club a favour?

Club Captain, David Caldwell, is looking forward to the tournament as he sees it as a great way to get his squad ready for the start of the season. "It's unfortunate that we still haven't managed to get ourselves a coach for this coming season, but I'm sure we will struggle through. It would've been interesting for a new coach to attempt to pit their wits against the best that Scotland have to offer."

More details on the tournament (including a schedule of matches) is available on the Club's website - www.eastantrim.co.uk
