EAST ANTRIM SHOOT TO THE TOP OF THE LEAGUE

East Antrim Hockey Club's 1st XI have been in the doldrums in recent years. Last season was disappointing to say the least. However, this week, the Section 2 league table shows East Antrim sitting proudly at the top of the pile. The reasons for the turn-around are currently being analysed, but there is no doubt that the team are getting used to winning. They are also benefitting from the extended pitch time at training sessions each week - 2 hours at the University at Jordanstown this season compared to just 1 hour in the past.

Another big factor, however, is the arrival of 2 new players this season. Johnny Porter joined at the start of the season after having played for Raphoe in the top flight. A move to the area forced Johnny into joining a new Club and Club captain David Caldwell was delighted with the acquisition.

"He gives us a new set of options in the attacking third of the field and the fact that we are scoring more freely this season is a direct result of Johnny's input to the team"

The other player to join more recently is Craig McGrugan. His experience in the top flight with Lisnagarvey is bound to be of help to the team.

The new players have also given the more established members of the squad more confidence and has enabled the 2nd XI to strengthen its squad as well.

The Section 2 title may be a challenge this term, but the squad intend pushing Ballynahinch and Down all the way.
