EAST ANTRIM CELEBRATE IN STYLE

East Antrim Hockey Club, celebrating their centenary this year, took on a strong Ulster Branch President's XI in a Northern Bank sponsored event to mark the occasion. Drafting in ex-international Paul Cooke as a coach for the day seemed like a good idea, and judging by the comments made by Club players after the event, Paul has made a lasting impression.

Saturday morning saw Paul Cooke take a 2 hour coaching session for the 1st XI squad - an intensive session that everyone thoroughly enjoyed. Then it was down to the serious stuff with a pre-match team-talk, photographs and a team presentation to Alderman Paul Girvan, Mayor of Newtownabbey. The usual speeches ensued, then the teams took to the field.

A bright start by the Glengormley outfit turned sour as Martin Coulter (Omagh) scored to give the President's XI the lead on 8 minutes. East Antrim continued to struggle against the cream of the league and it wasn't long before Michael Scott, also from Omagh, doubled the President's XI lead.

East Antrim continued to battle, but most of their new found tricks weren't materialising as were hoped. Chris Gregg (Portadown) scored twice in a minute just before the half hour mark to make the score 4-0 to the President's XI.

The half-time team talk from Paul Cooke, however, was positive. The teams returned to the fray and although Robert Hawkes' President's XI goal was rarely threatened, the East Antrim midfield and defence started to show that they were made of sterner stuff. In fact, the second half was completely devoid of goals. The final score of 4-0 was the only low point of the day, however, as both teams retired to the Chimney Corner Hotel for some post-match analysis!
